Telnet and Pine

[left.htm]

This page was built in order to help Xavier community retreive their email remotely using Telnet and Pine.  Don't worry, your computer most likely already has Telnet, and you won't need to download Pine.

Telnet is a remote connection program.  It is a text-based interface.  Pine is a text-based. server-side email program.  Since it is server-side, you do not need to install it on your computer.

This page has many pictures in .jpg format.  It may take a minute or two to load.   BE PATIENT!!!

Please follow the instructions and use the pictures as guides.

YOU MUST BE ONLINE IN ORDER FOR THIS TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!!

In order to begin, you must click "start" then "run."  Your start button should be in the lower left hand corner of you screen.

run1.jpg (38248 bytes)

In the "Open:" dialog box, type telnet then hit 'Ok'

A new window will appear.  It may look like the one below.  When the window does appear, click "Connect" once

telnetwindow1.jpg (24960 bytes)

Your screen should have a smaller window look like this:

hostname.jpg (15997 bytes)

in "Host Name:" type mail.xcp.org then click "Connect"

Telnet will take you to mail.xcp.org.  When the connection is successful, you will see the screen below:

username.jpg (22086 bytes)

Type in your username and password.   Your username will appear, but your password won't, so don't be alarmed.  If you did it worng, you will have a couple of more times to do it right.

Example:

enterpine.jpg (25372 bytes)

After you are logged in, you will receive the time you were last logged in (like above) and the prompt.  At the prompt, type pine

When Pine runs, you will get a menu like the one below.

pinemenu.jpg (70667 bytes)

YOU CANNOT USE YOUR MOUSE WITH PINE

Pine commands can only be done by the keyboard.  So, for example, if you wanted to see your folder index (where new messages are), type i.  If you wanted to quit pine, type q.  If you wanted to compose a message, type c.

compose.jpg (47979 bytes)

Use  the commands at the bottom of the screen to send, cancel, etc. you message.  The tilda in the command means to hold down the Ctrl (contrl) key while hitting the letter of the command.  So, if I wanted to send the above message, I would press Ctrl and the x keys.  First Ctrl, then x.

The main menu commands are still in effect here.  To get back to the main menu, press the M key.

GOOD LUCK!!!
